Sarah Puskavich, LCPC, NCC, CRC

Hi! I’m Sarah, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor

Sarah Puskavich is the founder of Balanced Thoughts Therapy, a Maryland-based mental health practice. Sarah created Balanced Thoughts Therapy in efforts after working with clients in various mental health settings and hearing their frustrations with the mental health field. Balanced Thoughts Therapy is built to offer accessible therapy, without the confusion or lack of transparency that folks often experience when looking for mental health support.

Sarah is dedicated to offering high-quality services and is always looking for ways to improve the practice and adapt to community needs. The fulfillment of working with clients while building a therapeutic relationship has been the fuel for creating this practice while bringing on clinicians who share the same passion.

Specialties and Typical Clients

The clients that Sarah tends to work with often struggle with anxiety and issues related to their mood. These struggles tend to create unhelpful patterns for her clients that they would like to change. Common issues these clients want to address related to their anxiety and mood include issues in their relationships, over-achieving tendencies, being unable to rest, anxiety creating self-doubt, and wanting to improve their self-esteem. Many times clients want to understand how their past, their family, and their relationships have shaped and affected themselves. Sarah works well with clients who are curious about themselves and are open to finding changes and coping strategies to reach their goals.

The diagnoses that Sarah most often works with include:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

  • Panic Disorder

  • Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD)

  • Major Depressive Disorder

  • Bipolar Disorder

  • Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder

Therapeutic Approach and Values

Many clients wonder what an average therapy session will be like. While working together, Sarah creates a balance between processing issues, and then developing coping skills to address concerns. Processing experiences and emotions allows you to focus on your experiences, identify patterns, sit with emotions, and clarify how you feel. Sometimes it also feels good just to get thoughts out of your mind within a safe space. While processing can lead to helpful insights and cathartic releases, adding in the skill development piece gives a framework for change to occur. It's Sarah’s role to propose a skill that may be helpful in addressing the issue that is being examined. Then together, Sarah works with her clients to modify the skill to make sure it's accessible and realistic for you. It is so important that this process is collaborative so you feel empowered to use these skills in your own life and understand the "why" behind it. The skills that are developed together, are not only backed by research, but have been shown to help people through Sarah’s clinical work.

The therapeutic modalities that Sarah opts to use vary depending on the specific issue, but include techniques to promote reframing of unhelpful thoughts, increasing distress tolerance, increasing emotional identification and processing, and creating a sense of empowerment. Sarah is a proponent of Health at Every Size, equity within relationships, and the freedom for individuals to express their identity freely

Sarah is dedicated to making the therapy space a warm and supportive environment for each of her clients, whether you’re meeting in person or online. Sarah sees therapy as a highly personalized experience, so she takes the time and conscious effort needed to build trusting relationships. This means that Sarah believes therapy should take each person's background, culture, and lived experiences into account. Sarah doesn’t assume to fully understand your experience, but rather expects that it's something you can explore together. Sarah further recognizes that we live in a world where we are not unaffected by our sociopolitical culture, so she welcomes clients to explore its influences in therapy as they are getting to fully understand themselves.

Sarah’s Journey Becoming a Therapist

Sarah’s path to becoming a therapist was fueled by an interest in the scientific aspects of psychology with the relational art of understanding people as humans. Throughout her education, Sarah was drawn to the processes of learning scientific principles and relying on the evidence of research to understand the world. Coupled with the observation of how mental health is dynamic in the methods needed to understand symptoms, build realistic treatments for real people, and deliver mental health care while building trust, Sarah became deeply interested in psychology. Sarah worked to immerse herself in various communities through Americorps, internships, and various work settings to find the population of folks she works with best. Sarah has also ensured that she has done the same therapeutic work as her clients to build a deeper understanding of the experience of receiving mental health care.
